Job Description

Western Forest Products is looking for an Assistant Sales Controller who will be based in our Vancouver, B.C. office.


The Assistant Sales Controller is a key business partner in the sales & marketing organization. The position is the financial partner of the custom cut division, responsible for the preparation and review of the monthly financial package and analysis. Additionally, the position will assist the Sales Controller in the preparation, analysis, and key messages with respect to sales business initiatives, margin improvement, process and systems improvements and variance analysis and reporting tools to understand trends and future business opportunities.


  • Custom Cut
    • Month-end closing process including journal entries, standard reporting package, account reconciliations, variance analysis and KPI tracking.
    • Preparing cut preform as and measure against actuals when cuts are complete.
    • Lead and coordinate the annual planning process, quarterly forecasts, and monthly forecasting.
    • Reconciliation of physical inventory counts.
    • Ensure compliance with Company policies, procedures and internal controls are in place for the division.
  • Sales and Marketing
    • Work with sales teams to identify regional, customer, and product strategies to deliver higher mill nets
    • Work with the Sales Controller to increase transparency in the business to improve business decision making and enhance customer service
    • Financial analysis of key sales growth and margin improvement initiatives
    • Financial partner in the growth and expansion of the lumber wholesales business
    • Work with the sales managers to provide financial analysis of sales strategies such as local sales vs. direct to market
    • Analyze freight expense and tie it to pricing and product strategies
    • Prepare presentations to communicate sales results and performance to target and strategy
    • Prepare ad hoc management analysis and requests as required

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge:

  • High level of business acumen and understanding of business process and value added analysis
  • Minimum 5 years business unit controller or similar experience
  • Lumber sales processes and products
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in the Forest Industry or a similar industry
  • Experience with Lumbertrack, JDE, & Microsoft Dynamics will be considered an asset

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Improvement oriented and focused on identifying business efficiencies
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Detail focused and strong ability to multi task with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work with tight deadlines and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization

Required Professional Designation/Certification:

  • CPA designation
